Why was the silent majority started and when did it start?

"The Silent Majority" = a political expression coined by President Nixon. He used it to make people believe that they were just like him and he just like them. That all those people who considered themselves part of the silent majority were on the side of Nixon and his cronies. He used the term to try and expunge people who were protesting his policies and the path that he was leading the country .Our country has certainly matured alot since those years. I think that if you used that term today, in any contex, it might be laughed at.
