Has anyone else ever had this problem with Facebook?

Yesterday and today, I was on Facebook and saw that there was a (1) next to my inbox. But when I clicked on it there was no new message. It's gone away and reappeared several times, and I'm not notified through email that someone sent me a message. Is this just a technical problem?
